Barrel at Bude

Subject to planning consent, Bude could become home to Cornwall’s second micropub, The Barrel at Bude Alehouse.

Ian O’Hare, of Stratton, has applied to Cornwall Council to transform a vacant shop at the top of Lansdown Road, Bude, into North Cornwall’s first micropub. The premises was previously a household bargains store, and before that a fancy dress shop.

Ian said: “I believe Bude is an excellent location for North Cornwall’s first micropub. With its great range of small independent shops and services, the addition of this first micropub will enhance the vitality and variety of amenities on offer to local people and visitors alike.”

The Barrel at Bude Alehouse will have a very local feel, focusing on small, independent Cornish producers of craft ales, of which there are 40, as well as Cornish ciders, wines and gins.

Ian said: “We are very keen to make this something that supports the local community and something that locals and visitors alike can feel part of. Once opened, we intend to ensure that the character and what we serve is determined by our customers and local independent suppliers.

“Although there are other pubs in the town, we will be different, serving only local ales, straight from the cask, and open for limited hours to ensure the beer is always served at its best.”

The Barrel at Bude Alehouse is proposing to open on Wednesday, June 14 (subject to planning and licencing applications), and thereafter every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evening from 4pm until 9pm, on Saturday from 1pm until 9pm (sometimes later) and on Sunday from noon, if there is any beer left, and then until it runs out. Winter opening hours may be shorter.

Ian said: “We have plans for regular live music from the pool of great talent we have here in Bude, and are very keen get the local community involved. We already have interest from one local club to use the Barrel as their spiritual home and clubhouse. Once all of our plans are confirmed we’ll share the news on our Facebook page.”
