Halfway House,PolbathickWith around 28 pubs closing every week across the UK, there’s some rare good news for the village of Polbathic, near Torpoint in Cornwall where locals are celebrating their beloved pub being plucked from receivership. The centuries-old Halfway House is now safe after a last-minute bid.

Eddie and Jenny Stanton, who own the Pickwick Inn, near Padstow, purchased the Halfway House just in the nick of time after a long period in the hands of the receivers. For Polbathic locals, it’s come as a huge relief as this busy and vibrant pub is the hub of the community.

Tenant Wendy is thrilled to be able to stay at the Halfway House. She said: “Losing Halfway would have a been a massive blow, not only for us, but also for the loyal locals that support us and cherish the pub. We’re really excited — the place is looking great, everyone’s over the moon!”

The strength of local feeling about the Halfway House is clear as last year villagers rallied together in an attempt to raise the money to buy the pub in a community ownership scheme. Despite raising an impressive £50,000, they failed to get the funds required.

The new owners are now in the process of renovating the kitchen and rooms, so after years of neglect the Halfway House is getting a well-deserved facelift. There are plans to increase the food offering in the future and add to what is already a beer-drinkers’ heaven.

Boasting an impressive range of independent and local ales, the Halfway House recently hosted its annual beer and cider festival which saw scores of enthusiasts enjoying the stunning beer garden as they sampled the finest local offerings and enjoyed an array of live music.
