St Austell Brewery’s Admiral’s Ale has struck gold at the World Beer Awards, winning the 4.5% ABV bitter category.

saadmirals1015Admiral’s Ale wowed the judges on all aspects, including aroma, flavour, appearance/condition and mouthfeel, as well as earning praise for its balance, character, complexity and quality.

The extra special bitter is a premium bottle-conditioned ale, which has been brewed using Cornish gold malt and locally grown barley, giving it a spicy and full-bodied taste.

Roger Ryman, brewing director and head brewer at St Austell, said: “Admiral’s Ale was created in 2005 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar and has become one of our most popular bottled beers ever since.

“This award is a great accolade and one to add to the collection for Admiral’s Ale, as well as some of our other beers, winning silver and bronze at the awards, including Tribute, Big Job, Clouded Yellow, Tribute Extra and Tamar Creek.”

[mp_quote cite=”Darren Norbury, Beer Today” cite_url=”#” quote_content=”When the first barrel of Admiral’s Ale was tapped at the 2005 Falmouth Beer festival, it was one of those beers that created an instant buzz. It was a very fast seller and no wonder – it was a robust, strong flavoured beer with good Christmas cake type malt notes but a delightful balance of citrus and spicy hops. The beer is unquestionably one of head brewer Roger Ryman’s finest and deserves to step out of the shadows of Tribute and Proper Job. It would be great to see it one handpump more often.”]
