A centuries old coaching inn on the main road between Worcester and Ludlow is being marketed by Colliers International on behalf of administrators.
The Crown Inn, in Hopton Wafers, near Kidderminster, is available at £895,000 for the freehold. Originally a 16th century coaching Inn, it has many period features, including an inglenook fireplace and exposed beams.
Colliers’ hotels director, Peter Brunt, said the large 18-bedroom inn offered considerable scope to achieve high levels of trade.
“This is a characterful inn in a historic setting within an easy drive of large population centres and a range of Shropshire attractions, including Ludlow, Long Mynd, the Severn Valley Railway, Ironbridge and Worcester.
“Stokesay Castle — described as the oldest fortified manor house in England — is a short distance away, as is Bridgnorth and Much Wenlock, Church Stretton and Craven Arms, all of which generate considerable passing trade.
“This is a large and high-volume business that would especially suit a corporate purchaser or private operators, who have the opportunity to be fully involved or step back and enjoy the lifestyle.”
The Crown Inn is situated alongside the A4117 and was sympathetically extended in 2011. The previous owners acquired the Crown in 2005 and added 11 bedrooms and two cottages in the grounds. There are two restaurant sections seating around 120 people.
Although the business continues to trade, it is being managed by administrators.
The unusual name of the village in which the Crown Inn is situated is a combination of hop — a Celtic word for a side valley — and the name of Robert de Wafre, who once held the manor.
