Andrew 'Barney' Barnett

Edinburgh-based Barney’s Beer is enjoying the spotlight with nominations in both the World Beer Awards and Scottish Beer Awards, winners in each to be revealed this week.

Since its inception in 2010, Barney’s Beer has been lauded for its ingenuity and taste. With a range of 11 beers under its belt, including staples Volcano IPA and Red Rye, new addition Bastard Amber has been getting lots of attention, with nominations in both the Scottish and World beer awards.

Inspired by an idea from Blacklight, Edinburgh’s theatre lighting company, Bastard Amber 02 is the name of a stage lighting gel. Amber ales are often the milder siblings of IPAs, but this one is fuller bodied and with more hop character.

In addition, Barney’s Beer Summerhall has been nominated for Scottish Beer Destination of the Year, while founder Andrew Barnett has been nominated for Master Brewer of the Year (sponsored by Anderson Strathern). Winners will be announced on Thursday, September 29 at a ceremony in Edinburgh’s Corn Exchange.
